How I build a canvas and do a scape…

I tend to make the frames and stretch my own canvasses where possible… It’s quite easy to do… You need wood.. wood glue.. scissors.. canvas.. a staple gun and a mitre saw…

Measure and cut the wood with the mitre saw… I made a hexagon for this particuler canvas.. cutting the wood at 12 inches long and a 65% angle for a hexagon ( If I remember rightly )… Glue the wood together then staple the back of the joined edges…

Once the frame is dry.. cut the canvas so it’s overlapping the wood enough to stretch it around the back of the frame.. then starting with the center of each piece of wood.. pull the canvas as tight as you can and staple it down… Then go to the corners and do the same thing… Each time you half each space in between until the canvas it’s stretched all around the wood… I usually end up with the staples about a cm apart…

I decided to build two canvasses for the scape I had in mind… I bought the canvas on a roll preprimed.. but you can use acrylic gesso for priming if the canvas is unprimed…

I usually do the lighter colours on the sky first flowing the brush in a rough perspective of the cloud formations I want… I then add the darker stronger colours.. blending them at the edges for a smooth flow…

I then highlight the sky and do the foreground after the sky is complete.. working from the center to the bottom of the canvas… Again I paint the lighter colours in first leaving rough spaces for rock formations… I add rock formations in between the background colours moving to the bottom of the canvas…

These painting’s were created for my younger brother for his birthday a while back and he loved them… 😀
